Nexium & Prilosec Usage Doubles Risks of Stomach & Gastric Cancer
According to new medical studies the use of proton pump inhibitors PPIs like Nexium, Prilosec, Prevacid and other heartburn meds is associated with increased risks of gastric cancer (GC) among HP-infected subjects who had received HP therapy. The PPI gastric cancer study was conducted with a medical / health database in Hong Kong taking data from patients using PPI between 2003 and 2012. The subjects in the study with positive diagnoses of gastric cancer were those who developed the cancers while still taking the PPIs or within 12 months of ceasing PPI therapy.
The study found that long-term use of PPIs (esomeprazole, lansoprazole, omeprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole) was linked to four additional stomach cancer cases per 10,000 people per year which per some medical professionals is not a huge rise, unless of course you among the unfortunate ones diagnosed. The study further found that the average time between the PPI usage and stomach cancer is usually about five years. The risk of gastric cancer to over eight times for those taking the PPIs for more three years. See PPI and Stomach Cancer for more information.
